San Diego, here I come!

I love to travel. When I was in middle school, I went to Russia with a club from my school. When I was a teenager it was day trips to Seattle on the bus. In my adult years it has almost all been about work. I made a couple of trips to Hawaii while I still had family there, and last spring my hubby and I went to Disney Land. Otherwise, my travels have mostly been to our office in Phoenix and once to England.

I have always wanted to buy a plane ticket on a whim and travel somewhere new. And to go all alone. To have the freedom to do what I want, when I want. To sit and read by the pool, stroll down the beach, spend 2 hours studying a painting in a museum, or perhaps just wander the city.

I don’t think I’ve ever expressed this desire to my husband. I am taking next week off, and he is not. I had planned to set up my easel in the garage and do some painting, visit my mom for a day, and maybe visit Seattle for a day. A day in Seattle alone is a joy I haven’t known in more than 10 years.

Imagine my surprise last night when he suggested that I use my week off to go for a little out of town vacation by myself. I was ecstatic. Not that I wouldn’t have done it eventually otherwise, but now I felt encouraged.

After I cooked dinner I checked my air miles and contemplated where to go. I had enough miles to travel anywhere my airline flys. Decisions decisions.

I chose San Diego for a variety of reasons, not least being the travel time. I should be able to get from my house to my hotel in less than 10 hours. That means more time exploring the city.

I’ve also never been to San Diego, and wanted to go somewhere where sunshine is pretty much guaranteed. I plan to visit the zoo (I hear it is phenomenal) and Sea World (I’ve never been), and to explore.

I hope to also maybe find a couple of game development companies that welcome the public. Will SOE or Rockstar allow me to tour their facilities? Probably not. Is it worth a try? Absolutely.

Have you been to San Diego? Is there anywhere you’d recommend I visit? Anywhere a woman traveling alone should avoid?

  1. Awesome!! Did you already happen to take your trip down here to SD? I live here in SD and I read your blog every now and again. You’re a uniquely interesting person 🙂 Don’t worry, that’s a good thing. Also, my brother lives in Bellingham, so I come to visit there every once in while. Anyhow… let me know how your trip went if you already came down. I’d love to hear about it!

    1. I did! I was in SD last week and have been lazy about posting since. I’m still trying to get back into my normal routine after being in vacation mode. It was a great trip, even with the weird weather.

      1. Yea, the weather was quite weird down here last week. I guess you came at the wrong time. Weather like that July puzzled all of us natives haha. How’d you like it down here though? Did ya have fun?

        1. I had a great time. Visited Sea World and the Zoo, and the Sony Online Entertainment office (as you might have guessed, this was a big deal to me). The weather wasn’t what I was hoping for, but it was still a great little trip. I’ll definitely be visiting again some day.

          1. Sea World, awesome. The San Diego Zoo, awesome. SOE, very awesome. That’s so cool you visited all those places in one trip. Quite a trip I must say. I understand the weather was puzzling that week, not typical SD weather during the summer. It was weird because the week after you visited, it was super hot, 90+ degrees and raining on and off. Strange… It’s funny, we’re carrying on a conversation in your comments section. Would you want to email? 🙂
